Erin Daniels – “Topic of the Week 3: Social Media”

Erin, I definitely would have to agree with you in that, all upcoming Liberal Arts majors should use social media on a very regular basis. It has become such a major part of our world today both in our personal lives and in the business community. We are definitely lucky to have grown up during the rise of computers. This has allowed us to understand how to use all these avenues where as those older than us may understand how they work but may not be able to fully utilize their potential. As an upcoming PR practitioner I feel that the more knowledge I have in social media the better I will be post graduation when I am out in the workplace.

Holly Wright – “Why Take a PR Course?”

I completely agree, I think that all marketing and advertising majors should be required to take an intro to public relations course. Before I took introduction to public relations I vaguely knew the difference between marketing and public relations and did not fully understand the major differences. Most anyone who is a public relations, marketing, or advertising major needs to understand these differences and similarities in order to know how to properly work together in the workplace, because most firms offer all three services.

Aezha Blake – “Movies”

I definitely think you are right. If I don’t hear about a movie by word-of-mouth then I usually hear about it by watching television. I know that movies are advertised through posters and other forms of advertising but if it is not being presented to me in the form of a trailer or by my peer’s excitement than I usually just ignore it.

Katherine Booth – “Why I Won’t Use Google+”

I am not a user of Google+ either. I think it was Google’s way of trying to make a “Google Facebook.” At the moment, I do not think that Google+ is all that successful. Then again when Facebook came out it took years to get the amount of users it has today. If Facebook was able to migrate users from Myspace to their site, then I don’t see any reason why Google+ would not be able to do the same in time.

Taylor Sullivan – “Movies/concerts”

I have also found that there is an app for Apple App store called “Live Nation.” I believe this company is owned by Ticketmaster. However, it is only for the ticket sales of live musical entertainment. Ticketmaster, on the other hand, sells tickets to every different type of event. This is a great app to have. It will alert you when one of your favorite artist’s will be preforming in your area and will also send you emails with promo codes for cheaper ticket prices. Overall, I feel this app is a must get. Best of all….. it’s FREE.

Jake Rainey – “Why do you think the relationship between Public Relations Practitioners and Journalists is the way that it exists today when the first PR Practitioners were those who had careers in journalism?”

This is an interesting point. Today, most journalists rely on press releases, etc. from public relations practitioners as a main source of information for their articles. In some ways you have to wonder what journalists would do without public relations practitioners. One thing is for sure; their work would definitely be cut out for them.

Week 4 Topic

The last few movies I went to see were “Taken II”, “Snow White and the Huntsman”, and “Little Fockers.” I found out about each of these individual movies in a different way. “Taken II” I heard about through word of mouth and closer to its theatre release date I began to see previews on television for it. “Snow White and the Huntsman” I heard about from a friend that invited me to go watch it with her (word of mouth). “Little Fockers” I heard about through word of mouth and through television previews. I feel that this is typically the case for live entertainment, such as concerts. The last two concerts I attended were Eric Church in Savannah (at the Savannah Civic Center) and Corey Smith (at the Perry Fair). I originally heard about the Eric Church concert through word of mouth but once it got closer to the actual date of the concert I began to hear about it on the radio. Corey Smith’s concert I heard about through television advertisements and by going to the fair website. I really would not dismiss traditional public relations and advertising because depending on the audience you are trying to reach, traditional may be the best way to get the message across.

Week 3 Topic: Why I will/will not use Pinterest

Do I use Pinterest? No. Pinterest is something that has never really appealed to me. It has very appealing aspects to some; however, for me not so much. Pinterest has a lot of qualities similar to Instagram but with less of a “taken from my iPhone” approach. My mother and sister are both hooked to Pinterest because they enjoy finding cool crafts, recipes, etc. to copy and attempt to do themselves. It’s amazing to me that people will see a picture of something and decide to make that dessert or paint that bathroom, when they would have never even thought about doing so had they not gotten on Pinterest that day and stumbled upon the picture. Personally, I don’t have the extra time in my day to get on Pinterest. I barely have enough time for Facebook and Twitter and in my social life those are definitely necessary to keep up with my friends and what is going on. According to an article on NPR most of Pinterest users are women, and an article on Mashable claims that you can also use Pinterest to find a job by pinning your resume. Although I may not feel that Pinterest is something I need in my life, do you?

Topic of Week 2 – An Ethical Lapse in the Public Relations Industry

Public Relations practitioners sometimes have to bend the truth or present it in a way that is not very ethical in order to keep their jobs. This summer Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign came out with a video entitled “No Evidence” which used a piece of footage from Hillary Clinton where she stated, “Shame on you, Barack Obama.” I feel this ad goes against honesty in the PRSA code of ethics because it makes those voters in America who may not watch the news or really know what is going on, other than word of mouth, think that Hillary Clinton said this about president Obama’s inability to effectively run our country, while he was in office. Although, the truth is that the clip was taken from the 2008 presidential campaign where Hillary Clinton was upset at the way Barack Obama lied about her in his campaign video. I feel this is an example of an ethical lapse in the public relations industry; however, I do not foresee the ethical lapses in politics ever going away. Unfortunately politics is a sport in which you must play dirty or you will not win. I personally am in support of Mitt Romney but as a practitioner do not agree with his misuse of video clips intended to mislead, do you?

Week 1 – Area’s of Public Relations

When it comes to public relations there are so many different areas one can go into. I personally would like to do event planning or crisis planning.  I have previously done event planning so I have a little bit of experience in that area. However, I have been told that with my personality I would be a better fit for sales and would be better off to pursue a career in that field. Once I get out of college I will definitely have to go with whatever I can get. In this economy recent grads with no experience have to take what they can get, ya know?
